Terra Nova Students got an up close and personal experience with our role in the water cycle on Friday. In the morning, students toured the St. Cloud Technical & Community College Water Testing Lab. Students conducted a hands-on experiment that helped us learn about the very high standards our drinking water must meet. STTCC is currently the only school in the state that offers this program.
In the afternoon, we visited the Buffalo Wastewater Treatment Plant. Students were able to experience first hand what happens to our domestic wastewater. We learned that it is an important and scientific process that reclaims our wastewater and makes it safe before returning it to natural surface waters. We also learned how we can be better stewards of our wastewater in our own homes. The City of Buffalo also delivered tote bags that included LED light bulbs, low-flow showerheads and faucet adapters, and an energy-efficient power strip so that we can lower our energy and water consumption. Terra Nova MAAP STARS Day 2 recap - It was another exciting day for the Terra Nova team! Brice earned first place for Entrepreneurship. Brice, Adam, and Jack earned the school's first plaque for the Parent Decision-Making event! Reid won a gift card by interacting with all of the Job and Career Fair Booths. And most importantly, we had a fun time together. We are so proud of this group (Belle, Nevaeh, Jack, Adam, Reid, and Brice) for how they worked together, represented themselves, and thanked all of the STARS volunteers who helped make this event a success. We are already looking forward to next year. There are many options to learn skills, get a secondary education, and so much more while being a civilian and a military member. What an amazing time at MAAP STARS for our Terra Nova Students. MAAP STARS is a student organization for the students of alternative programs in Minnesota. Students are competing in events that highlight their skills that will prepare them to get "Out of the Classroom, Into the World"
Our team of Belle Kasten, Adam Kasten, Reid Holker, Jack Kramer, Nevaeh Meyer, and Brice Hammer performed incredibly well and were rewarded for their many months of hard work preparing for these events. The team took first place overall in Lifesmarts! One of our teams will competed in the finals for Parent Decision Making this morning! We also had bronze ribbon earners for Employment Interview, silver ribbon earners in Parent Decision Making, and gold ribbon performances in Employment Interview and Team Management Decision Making. But more importantly, we are proud of how they are carrying themselves and representing Terra Nova and alternative education as a whole!
We want to congratulate Nevaeh Meyer! She was recognized on Thursday during the MAAP STARS awards ceremony as the MAAP STARS student of the year! Nevaeh was part of our inaugural STARS team last year. She has been integral in taking what she learned last year and helping our team get prepared for this year's competition. We get to see how amazing she is everyday. It was fun to see her recognized in this way.
