  • 23-24 SY EDUCATION SPECIALIST (6TH-12TH GRADE)/LICENSED ADVISOR *Behavior Specialist Preferred*

    Job Summary

    The Specialist Education Advisor works with 8-15 students (students on Individualized Education Plans (IEP), Section 504 Plans, and students that are receiving interventions as part of the Child Find Process) in the completion of Minnesota Standards requirements in a collaborative co-taught classroom.  The Educational Specialist Advisor will assist students in finding resources or steps of project completion as needed.  Keep all attendance, transcripts, and records up to date and available for students’ use.  The Educational Specialist Education Advisor is responsible for assisting Special Education Advisors in data collection, being present at team meetings and providing recommendations for educational programming. Additionally,  Advisors “check-in” with students daily setting goals that address academic as well as personal goals.  Advisors also take an active role in site-based teams.  Advisors take on additional duties as necessary, according to availability, skills, and talents.

    Required Qualifications:

    1. License Requirements: Minnesota licensure grades 6-12.
    2. Education: BA/BS from accredited college or university.
    3. Experience: Diverse background with hobbies and talents to share. Enjoy the outdoors, nature and outdoor projects.
    4. Degree of supervision: Indirect supervision, essentially reports to all staff.
    5. Physical demands: The position requires daily physical activities outdoors.
    6. First aid, CPR, wilderness safety, and lifeguard training may be required.
    7. Ability to serve on two management teams.
    8. Ability to think outside the box. Collaborate, take leadership and develop a system. Follow it through to completion.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    1. Charter school experience.
    2. Project-Based Learning and/or personalized learning experience.
    3. Teacher-led/powered school governance experience.
    4. License in Special Education and/or another license.

    Special Education Advisor/Teacher/Case Manager

    Reports to:  TPP (Team Professional Practice), Personnel Committee, Board of Directors

    Supervised by:  Indirect supervision TPP and Personnel Committee

    Terms of Employment: To be established by the Personnel Team and Board of Directors annually.

    Evaluation: Performance in this position will be evaluated annually by the personnel team in accordance with board policy.

    Summary:

    Instruct students with disabilities in basic academic and social skills.  Design and implement a program to help students with disabilities to get credits and successfully complete their schooling and prepare for life outside of school.  Complete paperwork, arrange, and participate in meetings as required by Federal Law.  Participate in the Child Study Team to design interventions, assess, and place students in appropriate programs/  Perform duties as part of site-based management teams in the school.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Plan IEP meetings, send out meeting notices to all team members, Facilitate IEP meetings, perform case management for students on IEPs, organize input from meetings, write IEPs,  and provide copies to required parties.
    • Conduct student assessments for initial and three-year Special Education placement (observation, achievement testing, and transition assessments, write up results, work with the school psychologist/contractors to complete the report).
    • Design and implement a referral process to identify students for Special Education. (Coordinate Child Study team, review interventions, complete paperwork for permission to assess, and work with concerned parents.
    • Consult with staff about student progress and alternative learning and evaluation methods for students who need them (meet with advisors of special Ed students regularly to discuss progress, make recommendations, change students’ schedules if needed).
    • Plan and carry out a program within the school to help all Special Education students attain basic skill levels and earn credits toward graduation.
    • Keep in regular contact with parents about meetings, progress, and concern.
    • Design activities and strategies that will promote individual students’ academic, transitional and behavioral goals.
      • Report progress on goals and objectives three times a year.
      • Design, implement and individualize alternative academic curricula for students.
      • Design and implement communication and social skills curriculum based in the needs of individual students
      • Help Special Education students, as needed, throughout the project process from proposal to presentation.
      • Direct paraprofessionals to  assist students through project support, behavioral monitoring, and checking student progress
      • Facilitating special education meetings with paraprofessionals to support positive educational and behavioral practices
    • Informing regular education staff about the state and federal regulations used in special education, and promoting “least restrictive environment” alternatives whenever possible
    • Follow established procedures for school purchases
    • Assist with giving tours of JGESA and communicating the mission and vision to guests, dissemination of the JGESA model, and marketing the school
    • Develop and carry out a yearly professional development plan
    • Follow the direction of EdVisions and the Board of Directors
    • Chaperone events and field trips, and supervise outside PE/activities, and other supervisory situations as needed

    Job Summary:

    A JGESA Student-Teacher will be privy to the many roles within a teacher-led school. Essential duties are to include providing academic skills support; fostering peer relationships and effective social skills; assist in individual and small-group classes in the Special Education and General Education settings so that students can have positive learning experiences at school.
